What is a "standard"?
The National Pigeon Association Book of Standards contains the official breed standards for the Pigeon Fancy in the U.S.
A Standard of Perfection (commonly referred to as "the Standard") describes the physical appearance, coloring, size, shape, feather qualities and behavior desired by each individual breed club for its breed of pigeon.
The Book of Standards is used by judges and by those who participate in the competitive showing of selectively bred birds to choose the best of the competing birds. (Pigeons shows are held throughout North and South America, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia.)
As pigeons are one of the most geneticaly diverse animals bred by humans, the NPA Book of Standards currently has over 230 breed standards.
Below are two sample pages:

The NPA Book of Standards:
• Contains over 500 pages, 8.5 by 11 inch format
• Colorful Loose-leaf binder for ease of use and updating
• For the first time, many breeds feature FULL COLOR standard drawings*
• Many breeds have updated standards from the previous edition
• Many new rare breed standards are included
• Over 230 breeds
